The Creation of International Atomic Energy Agency Essay

Nuclear security is one of the most important questions regulated by the world leaders. The creation of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was largely a result of the pursuit of the path set by the Barduch Plan in 1946 and President Eisenhower's Atom's for Peace initiative of 1953. While most people see the International Atomic Energy Agency as simply being the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the organization's historical development as well as its function within the nuclear world, is a bit more complicated than that.

The Atoms for Peace speech delivered at the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York by American President Dwight Eisenhower, is widely recognized as being the basis for the creation of the IAEA. In the speech Eisenhower refers to the coming of a new era, one of 'Atomic Warfare'. Thus, in a text reminiscent of Albert Einstein's resentments about the use of nuclear energy, the President advocated the need to create a program that would spread peaceful nuclear energy technologies to those in need of them, while at the same time preventing the spread of military-oriented types of nuclear technology. The United States, being the only nuclear state aside the Soviet Union at that time, was seen as having a paramount importance within the program.

Although the Atoms for Peace program only had a limited success, it nevertheless was seen as a desirable initiative by the international community. The United States went on to propose to create an agency that would be in charge of the fissile material and would control it in the manner of an international bank.
