Flouris&Oswald (2006, p.86) exemplify what information technologies and systems are used by airlines: airline costing and accounting systems; airline crew management software; airline planning, staff scheduling and tracking systems; airline payload software and systems; aircraft engineer, repairing and maintenance systems (MRO). Reservation and ticketing systems: Reservation System and Reservation CRS based Services and Technology; Application Development and Maintenance for Transaction Systems; Solutions of GDS – Airline interactions. EDIFACT technologies, web services, xml – based technologies and related ones. Authors also pay attention to systems which help in ticket distribution: Airline Booking Engines and Online Reservation Systems; Computerized Reservation Systems and Related Airlines Reservation Systems, and many others ( Flouris&Oswald, 2006, p.86).
All aforementioned allows us to conclude:
a. The main internal factor that has a great impact on aviation industry is a severe competition at the market of air transportation. The other factor that contributed to the current structure of airline industry is networking. There is growing tend to unite into aviation alliances such as Skyteam, Staralliance, Air France – KLM etc. Infrastructure, in particular airports, is very important for airlines operation as airports serve as their base. Labor factor also affects industry considerably. Because of its specific nature, it is hard to find sufficient number of highly qualified staff for, in particular shortage in pilots was constantly observed before recession.
b. Among major external factors it is necessary to mention situation in worldwide economic situation: as aviation is a global industry which relies hardly on economic development throughout the world. Current downturn demonstrated vulnerability of aviation sectors: sharp decline in business operation caused dramatic fall in transportation demands. The external other influences are: political action, seasons, and worldwide safety.
c. E-business and E-commerce produced a great effect in all industries' development. Aviation is no exception. The main gain that aviation obtained is wide opportunity for services sales and reduction of costs connected with paying remuneration to agents and employees who were directly involved in ticket sales. E-Commerce also made airlines and customers much closer. There were, however, negative consequences for travel agents.
