DAS – 14

Bollman et al developed a family strengths scale that could be used in self-report measures for evaluating marital quality. The themes associated with this scale are personal worth, commitment, conflict resolution, communication, positive interaction and time together. Items chosen from this scale were from the personal worth construct, except for item 4 as the authors had showed that the reliability of the scale increased with deletion of this item. Items were chosen from the personal worth, time together, communication and conflict constructs. These items were also revised to accommodate a graded response format.

MDS and PFQ

Some items were chosen from the MDS and the PFQ. Items were revised to accommodate a semantic differential scale, using polar opposites of good and bad. The items chosen are thought to reflect emotional support and intimacy. Fincham et al. suggested changing item questions into incomplete sentences so that they could be rated on such a continuum.

RBI

An item from each of the five domains were utilized and placed onto the graded response format under the domain of being ‘relationship beliefs'. The items were re-worded to accommodate such a scale.

KMS

Three items involved in KMS were also added to the good and bad semantic differential scale, instead of the original formats of a 7-point likert scale. These items are thought to reflect overall domain of marital satisfaction. These items were re-worded to be incomplete sentences in order to accommodate this scale.

MSI

Two items from the MSI were added to the good and bad semantic differential scale under the satisfaction domain and re-worded to reflect such a scale.
