Geothermal energy is one of the oldest types of energy extracted and used by humanity. Geothermal energy is considered one of the more environmentally friendly and economically feasible sources of energy.

Geothermal is a word of Greek origin, which literally means earth heat (geo – earth and thermos – heat). It denotes energy extracted from the heat stored in the Earth.

The most active geothermal resources are located in the area encircling the Pacific Ocean. This area also known as the Ring of Fire is where most of the tectonic plate boundaries are concentrated and where most volcanoes and earthquakes take place.

In history geothermal energy has been used for bathing in Palaeolithic times and for space heating in ancient Rome. Today we still use this energy for heating. We use hot water from springs and reservoirs near the surface to supply district heating systems. Yet most often of all geothermal energy is used for generating electricity.

There are the binary cycle power plants. This power plant uses geothermal hot water, which it transfers to heat and converts to another liquid. The heat causes the other liquid to transform into steam and that steam is used to set a generator turbine in motion.

Since geothermal power requires no fuel it is immune to fuel cost fluctuations. Geothermal power is highly scalable: a large geothermal plant can power entire cities while a smaller power plant can supply a rural village. There are however certain risks associated with geothermal energy extraction and usage.

In general it may be said that geothermal energy is a much more environmentally friendly and economically feasible method of producing electricity and heat.
