Buy Isabella Baumfree Life Story Essay
Isabella Baumfree was born a slave in Ulster County, New York. Her parents were slaves of a Dutch-speaking family, so Dutch became her mother tongue and the only language she knew. According to Isabella's own memories, at the age of nine she was sold away from her family to John Neely (Mabee 3). As the Neelys spoke only English, she did not understand the orders, and was often severely punished. Her master beat her so cruelly that she remained scarred till the rest of her life (Mabee 3). Later Isabella was sold to other people and her life in misery continued. She grew very religious and often prayed and talked to God. The family who owned Isabella for a long time were Dumonts. While working for this family, Isabella married another slave called Tom, who worked for the same family, and they had children. During that time the law of the New York State proclaimed a gradual abolition of slavery in 1799 – 1827. Isabella knew that all the remaining slaves were to be freed on July, 4, 1927, but she decided to escape earlier (Mabee 12). She stayed at Van Wagenens, the friends of her friend, but as the Dumonts found her and wanted to go back with them, Van Wagenens agreed to buy her and to give her freedom (Mabee 13). In such a way, Isabella became separated from her family. It is to be admired that she courageously decided to go alone, leaving her husband and her children at Dumonts'. She started her protest carefully, escaping from her masters with the intention that they would find her again. When on July, 4 all the slaves were freed, her children still remained in service of the Dumont family, and her son Peter was illegally sold out of state (Mabee 17).
