Bretons manifestoes of surrealism essay writing

The existence of surrealist group was confirmed on October 15, 1924, when Andre Breton published his first Manifesto of surrealism. Its primary objective was to deal with the goals and challenges of surrealism, thus defining the philosophical and psychological nature of the movement, which provoked a lot of arguments and discussion in the years to come.

Breton's manifestoes of 1924 and 1929 were presented as an opposition to a rivalry group of artists and defended dreams, madness and the force of human imagination over reasoning, logic, artistic rules, moral and social obligations. Andre Breton was informally called the "Pope of Surrealism". He wanted to combine conscious and subconscious into a new reality. He used the word surrealism to delineate the mixture of fantastic and real life elements into a superior reality. The first manifesto was immediately declared as a paragon of intellectual presentation, but in most cases it was referred to as an authority rather than fully read. The surrealistic ideas were rejected at first and viewed as bold to the artistic world.

Then Breton focuses on the ideas of madness. He states that people who are regarded as mad are in fact the "victims of their imagination", and in comparison to the ordinary people they are not limited by the society rules imposed on them. Breton also provides his reasons against the real and logical and stresses out the reevaluation of our morals and ideas. The manifesto then proceeds to the description of how to use automatic ideas, and how to cope with some situations surrealistically. After this guideline follow the examples, questions and answers from other writers. And, at the end nine points summarize Surrealism with its basic principles. The third point "We are determined to make a Revolution" has drawn much attention and invited many to participate in this movement.
