Nowadays animal testing and research is widely used in medicine and genetics. One of the main counterarguments to using animals for research and testing is that computer and other non-animal models can be built for these purposes. Researchers indeed try to use non-animal models, when it is possible, but most interactions between molecules, cells, tissues, organisms and the environment are too complex to be modeled even by the most sophisticated computer programs. Some animal rights defenders promote the viewpoint that researchers maltreat lab animals when possible, but the truth is that most animals are treated normally in research facilities, as the regulations and controlling measures are severe enough; moreover, underfeeding or beating would make animals unsuitable for research purposes.

Despite of its moral questionability, animal testing can't be substituted by any other equal procedure. Animal rights defenders argue that inflicting pain and death to defenseless creatures is immoral regardless of the purposes, but letting people and other living beings die of diseases that could be cured seems much more improper. Supposing that animals are treated humanely, using them for scientific research and testing of medicines is morally justified, as it allows preserving the existence of hundreds of millions of living beings.
